The hiring manager is the person the role reports to, and they are findable in a few minutes: the company's people, filtered by the department in the job title, one or two levels up, in the posting's location. ## By hand, in five steps

1. **Read the posting for the team.** "Reports to", the team name, the product name, the office. Each is a search term.
2. **Open the company page and filter People.** Search the department word from the job title (payments, growth, platform, design) and the location.
3. **Go one or two levels up.** A Head of, Director or VP of that function is the likely manager; a Senior Manager is likely for a junior role.
4. **Check recent activity.** A post about the team, the roadmap or the hire itself is the strongest sign you have the right person.
5. **Add the recruiter and one peer.** The recruiter on the posting confirms the manager; a peer on the team tells you what the work is really like.

## What not to do

- Do not write to the CEO of a 2,000-person company about a mid-level role. The manager is the one who shortlists.
- Do not guess from a title alone. "Director of Engineering" at a company with six of them needs the team name.
- Do not send the same message to ten people in the same team. Two or three, each written from their own profile, is enough.

Open the company's LinkedIn page, filter People by the department in the job title, and look for the person one or two levels above the role: a Head of, Director or VP of that function, in the same location as the posting. The job ad's own wording ("reports to", team name, product name) narrows it further. The recruiter named on the posting can confirm.

### What if the company is too big to guess?

Search the company's people for the product or team name in the job description, then for the most senior title in that group. Recent posts from that person about the team or the hire are the strongest sign. When two people fit, write to both; they will know each other.
